Best AI support platforms for technical products
Last reviewed:
The AI-for-support market has split into three camps: helpdesk-native AI (Fin, Zendesk AI, Freshdesk Freddy), docs-first assistants (Kapa, Inkeep, Kelu), and general chatbot platforms (Chatbase, Botpress). What buyers actually care about (retrieval accuracy, source coverage, surface breadth and pricing model) cuts across the three. This round-up is drawn from each vendor's own public site.
Choose the native AI (Intercom Fin, Zendesk AI) if your support lives in that helpdesk and you want one vendor. Choose Kapa or Inkeep if you are buying through sales for a technical product and want an enterprise contract. Choose Kelu if you want public, flat pricing that starts with a free plan, and one knowledge base that answers on a docs widget and through MCP on every plan, then in Slack, Teams and your helpdesk on Pro.

How to pick
If you're on Zendesk or Intercom already, evaluate the native option first (Zendesk AI or Fin). It's the tightest fit for that helpdesk, and there's no extra vendor. Fin now also runs on other helpdesks, so the choice is less about lock-in than it was; what remains is per-resolution pricing that moves with your volume. If you want the same knowledge base to answer outside support too (docs widget, internal Slack and Teams, MCP), evaluate a helpdesk-agnostic option like Kelu's Support Ticket AI alongside. Our AI for Zendesk, Intercom and Freshdesk comparison goes deeper. If your primary use case is docs and developer experience, evaluate Kapa, Inkeep and Kelu. All three ship a docs widget, an MCP server and a support form deflector. Kapa and Inkeep sell through sales (Kapa's Growth plan is usage-based; Inkeep's hosted product is Enterprise); Kelu publishes its prices and starts with a free plan. If cost is the primary constraint, Kelu's is the only free plan listed on these vendors' pricing pages (Kapa has a free program for qualifying open-source projects); Chatbase's self-serve plans start at $32 a month billed yearly. Chatbase covers more consumer channels (WhatsApp, Instagram, phone); Kelu adds hybrid search, reranking and abstention on every plan. If you plan to build your own, read the build vs buy analysis first. The real cost is engineering time plus ongoing connector maintenance.
The criteria that actually matter
Vendor comparison tables tend to blur into feature-count contests. Six criteria decide whether a platform works in production: 1. Retrieval accuracy on your content. Not "our model is 99% accurate": accuracy against your docs, on the questions your users actually ask. Most vendors here offer a trial or a pilot. Use it, and score the output. 2. Abstention. The worst answer isn't a wrong answer; it's a confident wrong answer. If the platform always generates something, it will make things up on the edge cases where your users need it most. Check that the vendor has a real abstention gate, not just a prompt asking the model to be careful. 3. Source-connector maintenance. Adding a connector is easy; keeping it working as Notion, Confluence and Zendesk change their APIs is hard. Ask how each vendor handles stale connectors and re-index costs. 4. Surface coverage on one plan. A widget you can install today, a Slack bot next quarter and helpdesk AI later, all from the same knowledge base, versus buying three separate tools. 5. Pricing model at your peak volume, not your steady state. Per-resolution pricing looks cheap at your usual ticket volume; a launch or a bad-release week can multiply that number. Flat pricing removes the surprise, at the cost of some included headroom you may not use. 6. Product or builder. Some platforms are turnkey (Kelu, Kapa, Fin, Zendesk AI). Others are builders that need design work (Botpress Studio, or Inkeep's agent builder and SDK if you take that route). The right choice depends on how much of your team's time you want to spend on the platform rather than on the docs it reads.

Frequently asked questions
Isn't the market going to consolidate on ChatGPT and Claude?
Consumer AI (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity) is already the front door for many questions. That's why most platforms in this round-up now offer an MCP server of some kind, so those assistants can retrieve from your knowledge instead of guessing from training data. The platform's job is shifting from being the answer surface to being the retrieval and grounding layer every answer surface uses.
How is 'AI accuracy' actually measured?
The most useful test is your own: take real questions or past tickets, run them through each tool, and score the answers. Ask each vendor how you would catch a regression after your next docs update. In Kelu, Simulations replay past resolved tickets with a confidence score per answer, and after launch you see thumbs feedback, citation coverage and a gap report of unanswered questions.
What about privacy and data retention?
Ask each vendor whether they offer zero retention, PII masking before model calls, no training on your data, a DPA, and where data is stored, and look for a published trust or security page. Kelu has PII masking and zero retention on every plan, never trains on customer data, stores data in the United States and offers a DPA; its SOC 2 Type II audit is in progress.
Which is the cheapest?
Kelu has the only free plan listed on these vendors' pricing pages (100 questions a month); Kapa has a free program for qualifying open-source projects. Chatbase's paid plans start at $32 a month billed yearly; Kelu Pro is $99 a month ($79 billed yearly) and includes Slack and Teams bots, connectors and helpdesk automation. Per-resolution pricing (Fin at $0.99 per outcome, Zendesk AI beyond its allowance) can be cheapest at very low volumes but is harder to forecast.
What's the fastest to deploy?
Self-serve tools (Kelu, Chatbase) and native helpdesk AI you already pay for (Fin, Zendesk AI) can be switched on the same day. Kapa has a self-serve trial; its paid plans and Inkeep's hosted product are bought through sales.
