File Upload
Upload PDF, Word, Excel, CSV, Markdown, HTML, and text files directly
What is File Upload?
Not all knowledge lives on a public URL. Internal runbooks, policy PDFs, exported reports, and spreadsheets often exist only as files on shared drives or local machines. Kelu's file-upload source lets you ingest these directly — no public URL required. Supported formats: PDF, Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx, .xlsm, .xltx, .xltm), CSV and TSV, HTML (.html, .htm), Markdown (.md, .mdx), and plain text (.txt). Maximum file size: 32 MB per file.
How Kelu works with File Upload
Everything you can do once the integration is connected.
Wide format support
Upload PDF, Word, Excel, CSV and TSV, HTML, Markdown, and plain text files. Kelu extracts text, tables, and structure from each format and normalizes to clean markdown before chunking.
Up to 32 MB per file
Each file can be up to 32 MB. Upload up to 10 files (32 MB in total) in a single API call using the multipart form-data field 'files' (repeatable). PDFs up to 7,000 pages are indexed.
Dashboard drag-and-drop
In the Kelu dashboard, open a File Upload source and drag your documents into the upload zone. Files are indexed right away — no crawl configuration needed.
API upload for automation
POST files programmatically via POST /api/v1/sources/:id/files with a multipart body, using a dashboard sign-in token. Integrate file upload into your document pipeline, CMS export, or report generation workflow.
How to set it up
- 01
In the Kelu dashboard, create or open a knowledge base and add a File Upload source. No URL configuration is needed.
- 02
Upload files using the dashboard drag-and-drop interface or via the POST /api/v1/sources/:id/files API endpoint with multipart/form-data.
- 03
Files are parsed and indexed right away. Ask in the Playground, or add the chat widget, to start asking questions against the uploaded documents.

File Upload — Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about connecting Kelu to File Upload.
Kelu supports PDF, Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx, .xlsm, .xltx, .xltm), CSV and TSV, HTML (.html, .htm), Markdown (.md, .mdx), and plain text (.txt). Maximum file size is 32 MB per file. Up to 10 files (32 MB in total) can be uploaded in a single API call.
CSV rows are converted to structured markdown tables before chunking. Each table section (or a sliding window of rows for large CSVs) becomes a chunk. Column headers are preserved as context in every chunk so retrieval works correctly even for partial row matches.
Kelu's parser extracts tables from PDF and DOCX files and renders them as markdown tables in the normalized content. This ensures that tabular data — pricing tables, comparison matrices, feature grids — is searchable and citable in AI answers.
Yes. Re-upload a file with the same filename via the API or dashboard and Kelu replaces the previous version's chunks. The old chunks are deleted and the new content is re-indexed immediately.
Each file becomes one document and counts toward your plan's indexed-pages limit. See the pricing page for the limit on each plan.
