Index video transcripts and answer questions from your YouTube content
What is YouTube?
YouTube hosts vast libraries of tutorial, product demo, conference talk, and support content. Most of this knowledge is locked inside video files — unsearchable and unreachable by AI. Kelu fetches video transcripts (auto-generated or custom captions) from your channel and playlists, splits them into timestamped sections, and indexes them so users can ask questions and get precise answers with timestamps and video links as citations.
How Kelu works with YouTube
Everything you can do once the integration is connected.
Transcript indexing with timestamps
Kelu fetches auto-generated or uploaded caption tracks for each video and splits transcripts into sections at the video's chapters, or every minute or two, each with a timestamp heading. Answers cite the video.
Channel and playlist sources
Index all of a YouTube channel's uploads, or only the videos and playlists you pick. New videos published to the channel or to a chosen playlist are picked up on the daily sync.
Automatic caption selection
Kelu uses English captions when a video has any (your own first, then auto-generated), otherwise the first caption track. A video with no captions is indexed from its description.
Incremental sync
Kelu checks for new videos and updated transcripts every 24 hours. Content that has not changed is not re-embedded, keeping processing costs low.
How to set it up
- 1
In the Kelu dashboard, add a YouTube source. Enter the channel ID (it starts with UC) or its @handle, and click Load channel.
- 2
Pick All videos, or Choose videos and playlists and tick the ones you want. Click Add source. The first sync starts right away and fetches their transcripts.
- 3
Embed the widget on your docs site, help center, or YouTube channel landing page so users can ask questions and get answers that cite the right video.

YouTube — Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about connecting Kelu to YouTube.
Yes. Kelu uses YouTube's auto-generated caption tracks when no manually uploaded transcript is available. Auto-generated accuracy varies by video — for highest quality, upload corrected caption files via YouTube Studio.
Not as a link. Each transcript section is indexed under its start time, such as [12:30], so an answer can say where in the video it came from. The citation links to the video itself, not to that second.
Kelu indexes the channel's public uploads, or the videos and playlists you pick. Private, deleted, and region-blocked videos are skipped.
A video with no captions is indexed from its description; one with neither is skipped. Kelu processes all other videos in the channel or playlists normally. You can review skipped videos, with the reason, in the source's Sync history.
Each video becomes one document and counts toward your plan's indexed-pages limit — see the pricing page for details.
